New Teen Hours!

The Boys & Girls Club will soon be holding special hours for our teen members ages 13 to 18 years. We will be open on Friday nights from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. for teens only. Available at this time will be our game room (air hockey, Playstation 2, foosball, and more) our Arts & Crafts room, and open gym time to do a variety of sports. Air Hockey and Playstation 2 tournaments will be arranged, a concession will be available selling refreshments, and movies and DVD’s will be available.

Another activity that we will be adding is the coffee house night. On these nights we will have coffee drinks available, an open microphone for youth to share poetry or music, and a Karaoke machine for all to use. The Boys & Girls Club is also arranging for dance instructors to come and present on some of these nights. They will teach such techniques as Swing dancing, Jazz dancing, and Break-dancing. Youth will be free to participate or just observe. The Boys & Girls Club of Bay Mills is developing many new and exciting youth programs for our members. Please come and see what we have to offer our local teens.

SMART Moves

SMART Moves is a program that teaches Skills Mastery And Resistance Training. It is broken up into different age groups and maturity levels and uses a variety of methods to get the lessons across. The programs use role-playing, skill practicing, small group discussions and other experiential techniques to engage the students in the lesson information. The main messages that are presented are that young people should not be involved in the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs, and, with the older age groups, that young people should postpone sexual involvement. We have already had a group of 10 – 12 year olds graduate from our Start SMART program and we are currently running a session with our 8 – 9 year olds of SMART Kids. Another program that we are preparing to hold this summer is Stay SMART for our 13 – 15 year olds. A lot of focus is put on helping youth to make smart and healthy choices for their lives. There are many other sections of the SMART Moves program and we are hoping to gradually start incorporating many of them into our local Boys & Girls Club. This program is one we hope will continue and grow throughout the duration of the Club.

“THE POSITIVE PLACE FOR KIDS”

Sometimes a world of difference can be made just in a smile, or by one adult taking a child by the hand and saying... I believe in you!

At the Boys & Girls Club of Bay Mills, that's what we're all about. We're providing a wholesome environment where children, ages 8-18, can spend time after school and during the summer-a place where young people have the feeling of belonging.

The word "Club" says it all. It's a place where kids come together for a common purpose. Sometimes that purpose is to learn new and exciting things... sometimes it's just to hang out or shoot baskets.

The Boys & Girls Club of Bay Mills is our community coming together and saying we believe in our youth. We believe in providing a character building environment that's safe andsupportive. It's all of us joining together to make our world a better place... ONE CHILD AT A TIME!

MISSION STATEMENT

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Bay Mills is a local extension of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Grand Traverse, and they are an autonomous affiliate of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, whose mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, caring citizens.

AFFILIATION

The Boys &Girls Club of Bay Mills has been an extension of The Grand Traverse Boys & Girls Clubs which have been an affiliate, since 1989, of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bay Mills is part of a 135 year old "movement" of almost 1700 clubs, serving over 2.5 million girls and boys. Our affiliation with Boys & Girls Clubs of America is for technical and marketing purposes. The national organization provides technical assistance, professional staff training and resource development support Our club, as is the case with every Boys & Girls Club in the U.S., is a completely autonomous organization with a local board of directors. This board, made up of volunteer community leaders, sets policy and raises the money necessary to operate the club. The club staff, with the board's assistance, evaluates the needs of our community, and plans club programs according to those needs.

CORE PROGRAM

Using three methods, Individual Guidance, Small Group and Large Group activities, we provide a Core Program based on the physical, emotional, cultural and social needs of girls and boys. Recognizing developmental principles, the club offers diversified services in six areas:

  • PERSONAL & EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • CITIZENSHIP & LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

  • CULTURAL ENRICHMENT

  • HEALTH & PHYSICAL EDUCATION

  • SOCIAL RECREATION

  • OUTDOOR & ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

This program philosophy is based on a Youth Development Strategy which works to instill in girls and boys a sense of:
  • COMPETENCE : The feeling that there is something they can do and do well.
  • USEFULNESS : The opportunity to do something of value for other people.
  • POWER/INFLUENCE : A chance to be heard and to influence decisions.
  • BELONGING : A setting where young people know they "fit" and are accepted.
When this strategy is fully implemented, the self-esteem of girls and boys is enhanced and an environment is created which helps them achieve their full potential.
