ALLOTTMENTS

The Treaty of July 31, 1855 allotted land to all six bands. In 1861 the United States bought the land at Iroquois Point from the Methodist Mission to be issued out as land allotments. The Methodist mission kept 20 acres for their church.
  • Each adult head of the family received 80 acres.
  • Each single person over 21 years of age received 40 acres.
  • Each family of orphaned children under 21 years of age containing 2 or more persons, received 80 acres.
  • Each single orphaned child under 21 years of age, received 40 acres.
The agreement was the land would remain tax-free for 5 years. Because the Ojibwe lived off the land and had no source of income, it was all lost to back taxes. Not one allotment belongs to the bands today. In the 1970's Bay Mills bought the remaining 20 acres from the Methodist Church, which is now the land base for the present day Bay Mills Indian Community.
