METHODIST MISSION
Three different missions were soon established at Bowating. They were the Catholics, Baptists and Methodists. Rev. John H. Pitezel, Methodist Minister arrived in 1843 taking over the local native ministry. After several years of his whole congregation migrating seasonally to their hunting grounds thirty miles west, he finally decided to follow them. In 1849 he started a mission at Naomikong. By 1857 the mission had moved to Iroquois Point and was named Shawville in honor of Presiding Elder James Shaw who was well liked by the local Ojibwe. By 1860 it was known as Iroquois Point mission, named after the famous 1662 battle between the Iroquois and Ojibwe. Which we won of course!
