Commodity Director says thanks for dream come true
To the Editor,
I would like to take a moment to thank all the hardworking people who helped me to realize my dream of building a new facility for the Commodity Food Program.
First and foremost, I will never be able to tell Kathy Adair how grateful I am that she was willing to write the grant for us — twice. If not for her skills and commitment there would be no new building.
Secondly, I need to thank Dick Timmer for overseeing the construction. He realized that this was not just a building, but also a home to many programs that greatly affect our community. With this vision in mind he made sure that the structure fit the dream. I must say, Dick, it is much more than a rectangle with a bathroom.
To Cheryl Parish, a.k.a. “mom,” thank you for your time and involvement. As busy as you are, I always felt like our project was important and that we had your full support. Thank you so much for your understanding and patience, and for finding that extra pair of scissors. That meant so much.
To Gail Glezen — if you wouldn't have sat down with me that day and helped me design a floor plan I never would have been taken seriously. You helped to get it all going.
To the rest of the staff at the Housing Authority, I thank you for putting up with all of my crazy phone calls and taking down all of my lengthy messages. Although Jess, you still have to do something about that supermarket music when you put people on hold.
Thank you Jennifer Dale for your photography and for offering us the use of your computer. It was greatly appreciated.
To Betty Cameron, Chris Henry, the Chum's Cafe staff and Bay Mills Resort and Casino. Thank you for all of the beautiful trays of food on such short notice.
Thank you Executive Council for supporting the construction of our new facility.
To Deb and Mariah and Nick at Bay Mills College thanks for all your time helping with invitations, supplies, holding the baby, and listening to me rant and rave on the bad days. I'm sure there will be more so pick up some Diet Coke.
A great big Thank You to Kris Fischer for all her efforts while I have been on maternity leave. It's so nice to know that during all the craziness of the last few months you've been there to carry the load when I couldn't. And, yes, you can take some vacation when I get back. If you haven't already been committed.
Lastly, to all of our clients, thank you for your patience during this difficult transition and my absence from the office. I hope to be able to provide an even higher standard of service from our beautiful new facility.
Sincerely, Leah Jahnke

Councilperson says “thank you,” asks for support
Dear tribal members:
Thank you, for your support over the past two years. I have learned many lessons along the way. Although some goals are still pending I have not given up hope for them to be successful, too. I have enjoyed talking and listening to your advice, concerns and wisdom.
Everyone in the community shares responsibility for making the community successful and I have seen positive changes. At times we have felt overwhelmed because decisions were not easily solved, but time and effort made the difference. I would like to continue moving forward with our accomplishments. I have encouraged everyone to be a part of the decision-making process, so please take the time to support your leaders, whomever they may be.
I would also like to give my sincere gratitude to those I have served with over the past two years — your knowledge and advice gave me the confidence I needed.
Once again, election time is approaching and I would like to ask for your support. I would appreciate any advice you may have. My only desire is to serve as an election official who will listen, learn and respect the sovereignty of our nation.
Sincerely, Norma J. Bennett, Bay Mills Executive Council member / Councilperson

CAUSE meets third Thursday of each month
Hello everyone,
I hope everyone enjoyed his or her summer. Our children are going back to school and it's time to think about their education. Please remember that Bay Mills offers the opportunity for parents and children to meet with informed advocates from the Citizen's Alliance to Uphold Special Education.
If you have any concerns about special education students or children with any disability, please plan to attend. The meetings will be held at the Ellen Marshall Memorial Center's first floor conference room. So pass the word that CAUSE advocates will hold their regularly scheduled meetings on the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
If you have questions or cannot attend the meetings, call CAUSE. They are listed in the phone book at 906-635-9573 or 1-800-53-CAUSE. Their new office is in the Michigan Works building on Easterday Avenue in Sault Ste. Marie. I can be reached at 906-248-3204.
Thank you, Cheryl Baragwanath

Candidate asks for support
Dear Community Members,
In no time, November elections for tribal council will be upon us. As a fellow community member, I believe it is our duty to reflect upon the efforts of our elected officials so that we may judge for ourselves whether their two-year commitment proved beneficial to the community. Furthermore, we must also consider the continued work that must be done and the capabilities of each council member to further tribal endeavors, promote stability, growth and to work as a team. Our answer to these questions will, undoubtedly, mirror our personal beliefs, family values, experiences, and relationship ties to one another. It is my hope and challenge to all eligible members that we express our opinion by putting forth a vote in this upcoming election.
Having said that, I would like to announce my candidacy for tribal treasurer. As treasurer, I would continue the duties by ensuring membership receives accurate information regarding the financial status of the tribe and are aware of future interests and the potential financial obligations incurred. Notwithstand-ing, I would also serve as a vehicle to the will and needs of the members. Finally I will be a vocal member of the council, confident with expressing my opinion and taking a stance on the various issues that our tribal council faces. I hope I have your support and vote at election time.
Thank you, Richard LeBlanc
