Octoberfest Block Party Oct. 11
An Octoberfest Block Party is planned for Saturday, Oct. 11 from 1 p.m. until 12 a.m. at Portage Avenue between Ashmun St and Gov. Osborn Blvd.
Events scheduled are Recipe Walk from 1 to 4 p.m., Farmers' Market from 2 to 4 p.m. with music, food and beverages, vendors, activities and more throughout the day.

The Annual Arts Auction of the Sault Area Arts Council will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, in the LSSU Cisler Center Galley. Irwin McDonald will be the auctioneer. The auction is composed of original 2- and 3-dimensional work by area artists and craftsmen, books, workshops, music and concert tickets. Among the offerings is a framed and remarqued, limited edition print by Mary Demroske; a framed print by Zoltan Szabo; original paintings by Maureen Mousley, Anny Hubbard, Ellen Hadath, Gene Usimaki and Al Hansen, among others; sculpture by Clint Mulder, Michael Schroeder and Rick Shapero; jewelry, drawings, pottery, stained glass, wood, weaving and much more.
The auction will be preceded by a gala dinner. The deadline for dinner reservations is Wednesday, Oct. 15. The auction begins at 8 p.m. Oct. 18, and is open to the public and free of charge. Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a special food and nutrition program promotion good health and nutrition. Those who are pregnant, breast-feeding, postpartum, or with infants or children up to 5 may be eligible for WIC.
WIC income guidelines are: $22,422 for a family of two and $28,231 for a family of three. For each additional member add $5,809. (A pregnant woman and unborn baby equal a family of two.)
The WIC office will be at the Bay Mills Health Center on the last Tuesday of the month. Clinics are also located in Sault Avery Square and the Kinross Co-Op Mall.

The Annual Halloween Sobriety Conference will be held Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Bay Mills Cultural Center, beginning at 4 p.m. There will be exciting speakers, dinner, a costume contest, a D.J. dance, games, door prizes, traditional drummers and singers and lots of fun!
Everyone is welcome. Children under 12 should be home at 9 p.m., and anyone over 13 should have an adult chaperone at all times.

Firewise for homeowners
Firewise is a new wildfire prevention program for homeowners from MSU Extension and the Michigan DNR to help prevent wildfires or limit the damage they cause. Between 8,000 and 10,000 wildfires occur in Michigan each year, with about 200 homes or structures damaged or destroyed. Only 2 percent of wildfires are due to natural causes; one-third are caused by burning trash. Homeowners can use Firewise to understand how fires get started, learn how to use landscaping materials and other changes to decrease threat from wildfires and how to make their homes more accessible to fire and rescue vehicles and personnel. Fitness Class for the Beginner — Mondays, 11:30 am, Waishkey Center Gym. Safe and enjoyable exercises to help improve circulation, flexibility, strength and coordination. This gentle exercise class is aimed at improving health. If you have Diabetes, Arthritis, a bad back, want to lose weight, or just want to feel healthier this class if for you. Free!
Aerobics — At the Waishkey Center Gym. Mondays & Wednesdays 12-1 pm and Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:45-5:45 pm. Fee required.
Armchair Exercise — Mondays and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. in the Waishkey Center Gym. Improving circulation, flexibility and strength is important and possible regardless of age. The exercises we do will lessen back and leg strain becasue they are performed sitting down. Join us for this safe and enjoyable exercise. Free!
Water Exercise — at Lake Superior State University, Mondays & Wednesdays 6-6:50 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday, 10-10:50 a.m.
Transportation provided. Elders can be picked up and dropped off at their home. We will be departing from the Waishkey Center 45 minutes before class. Fee required.
Attention Bay Mill members: Eye Appointments
Bay Mills members: we are now scheduling our eye appointments with Dr. Dale Johnson. he has his own office now, located at Arlington Plaza, 128 W. Spruce, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. We also have a contract with Wal-Mart, Dr. Klicka. When you call for an appointment, please let us know where you would like to go. Any person who has Medicaid must use that resource first. Sault Vision Clinic will take Medicaid; please make you won appointments when using Medicaid.
CHS Contract Health
Any Bay Mills female between the ages of 40 and 64 who comes in for a women's health care exam will need to fill out an application for the BCCC Program. This program is an alternate resource to our Contract health program. If you are eligible for this program, it will pay for your exam and any co-pays and deductible from Blue Cross/Blue Shield. When scheduling an appointment, please ask Diana about an application, or contact Donelda, Vicki or Sandy and ask them for an application, or any questions about the program.
Charter Communications customers to receive new account numbers
Charter Commnications is converting to a new billing provider, effective with the November cable bill. Customers will receive new account numbers, and, in some cases, a new billing cycle and due date. Please make note of these changes. Those who now use an automatic or online payment system will need to update their information with their method of payment.
The Gnoozhekaaning Cultural Center, on Tower Rd. on the Bay Mills Reservation, is offering a number of activities this October. Watch for announcement updates.

Dorothy Sams visit — Late October, dates and times to be announced. Dorothy Sams, Mille Lacs elder and a member of the Midewiwin (Grand Medicine Society), is a counselor at the Four Winds Treatment Center in Mille Lacs.
