BRIMLEY — Michigan parents and students will see additional schools open their doors next fall as the Bay Mills Community College (BMCC) gets set to receive and review applications for charter school authorization.
According to an Oct. 3 press release, the college will accept applications until 12 p.m. noon on Friday, October 31, 2003. BMCC is seeking applicants that target urban, minority, or economically disadvantaged children in a K-12 format.
College President Michael C. Parish said in the release that the college “realistically cannot wait any longer to begin this process if parents and students are going to have the opportunity to attend a new charter school next fall,” adding that “this time table will give us adequate time to closely review the applications and give any authorized schools time to prepare to open.”
The BMCC Board of Regents will begin the review process after receiving applications. The board will assess the applicants using a list of criteria that includes successfully demonstrating a need of the community for a charter school, availability of resources (including a facility), as well as clearly stated and measurable educational objectives.
The Bay Mills Community College has authorized 11 charter schools since 2000, out of more than 60 applicants. The college's charter school office oversees the operations of those 11 schools in Bay City, Brimley, Flint, Jackson, Mt. Clemens, Muskegon, Pontiac, Romeo, Sumpter Township, and Waterford.
