Special thanks from family of Ben Carrick Sr.

May these few words serve to express the gratitude in our hearts for the gifts of kind words, the loving embraces, the nourishing food and the tears and laughter shared during dad's long illness and passing.

Our family is honored by the friendships, love and respect of the Bay Mills Indian Community.

We offer a special thank you to all the people who provided the meal and to those who served it both at the wake and after the funeral. Jacques, thank you for the fish, dad would have loved that. A special thanks to Norman for the fire, Jason Pesola and Mike Breakie for the wood, to Bob, Irma and family for all the food and support, to Keith and Janice for your special presence, to Father Pete for officiating, to the staff of the Bay Mills Medical Center and to the other Carricks (one name — one heart.)

Your kindness will always be remembered,
The Family of Ben Carrick Sr.

College graduate thanks community

Dear members of the Bay Mills Indian Community Executive Council:

I would like to take this opportunity to offer heaps of gratitude to my community for supporting me financially, physically, emotionally, ad spiritually throughout my four years of college.

The financial aid offered to me through the Bay Mills Education Incentive Program allowed me to be able to afford a world-class education. It also allowed me to keep my student debts low which will help me to better provide for my soon-to-be family.

Many members of the community and the tribal government offered support, praise, and encouragement as I progressed. Oftentimes, such kind words came when I found myself struggling and my strength waning.

It was with this support that I was able to become one of a lucky few Bay Mills citizens to obtain an undergraduate college education.

In the continued spirit of our people, I am proud to acknowledge that my accomplishments as a student do not belong to me alone, rather, they belong to the people of my nation who offered their contributions, large and small. I am also proud to say that despite the many political rifts that exist within our tribal nation,we continue to support one another just as our ancestors did and instructed us to do.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank members of the Bay Mills Indian Community Executive Council, past and present, and the citizens of Bay Mills, those in this world and the next, who allowed me to realize one of my biggest dreams.

Sincerely,
Bryan T. Newland

A special thank you to all my gray-haired friends: Marie, Amelia, Irma and especially my sister-in-law, Aggie, for all your love and support.

MSU extension of governor list of cuts

Dear Citizen of Chippewa County:

Have you ever called your local MSU Extension office about a household pest question? Or to test your soil to maximize your plant growth? Attended Master Gardener Class? Participated in the Sustainable Logging classes? Been on a pasture walk to see new forage varieties? Seen our groundwater model in action? Obtained free vegetables during WIC classes? Had assistance with Breastfeeding? Are you a past or present participant of 4-H? We appreciate your involvement with MSU Extension and are asking for your continued support of our educational programs.

We hope you are aware of the current discussions Governor Granholm is having with citizens regarding some tough budget cuts she is considering. On the list of cuts she is presenting for discussion is elimination of state funding for MSU Extension and the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station.

MSU Extension was established in the early 1900s as a three-way partnership between federal, state and local governments. The current $28.6 million that the state appropriates is coupled with about $10 million in federal funds, approximately $18 million in county and local funds and more than $21 million in grants. In other words, the state's $28.6 million contribution leverages an additional $50 million.

MSU Extension employs 1,400 educators in every county and faculty on campus. Without the state's investment, the partnership would collapse and the state's premiere land-grant education programs would end. The same would be true for the research programs of the Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station.

I am requesting your assistance in letting Governor Granholm, Representative Scott Shackleton, and Senator Jason Allen know of your positive experience with MSU Extension programs. They need to know how you feel about cuts they are considering. I think you could send a powerful message and provide an important voice of concern on behalf of the essential programs we have provided in your county.

To make a contact, please call, write or e-mail our public servants as follows:

Governor Jennifer M. Granholm
PO Box 30013
Lansing MI 48909
ph 517-373-3400
fax 517-335-6863.

You can also utilize the e-mail form, Share Your Opinion, to express your views without expecting a response from Governor Granholm. This form is available at http://www.michigan.gov/gov/0,1607,7-168-21995-65331-,00.html

Representative Scott Shackleton
S1486 House Office Bldg
PO Box 30014
Lansing MI 48909-7514
ph 517-373-2629
fax 517-373-8429

Senator Jason Allen
PO Box 30036
Lansing MI 48909-7536
ph 517-373-2413
SenJAllen@senate.michigan.gov

If you have a direct relationship with our legislators or have an opportunity to meet with them in the next week, your message will be even more powerful. Contacts need to be made within the next week since the governor indicates she will announce her plans for cuts by early December. Discussions between the governor and legislators on the composition of cuts have already begun.

Your message need not be long or involved. Simply state how local county programming has benefited you and why you feel it should be preserved. If you would like support in developing your message, please contact us at 906-635-6368 or lucas@msue.msu.edu and we would be more than willing to help you develop the message.

Sincerely,
Jim Lucas, County Director

Miigwech to Wanda and Becky

As the Coordinator of Bay Mills Community College Language Institute, I highly commend Wanda Perron and Becky Munz in their efforts in promoting our beautiful language in the BMIC Newspaper. I am extremely pleased that these former students, along with many others are passing on the language that they have learned with their own community members, especially to our children. The hard work of these students have proven that they are utilizing their skills and knowledge of the language and doing their part in preserving Anishinaabemowin. Miigwech to these fine, beautiful people. With efforts such as this, our people will continue to learn what was once almost totally lost. Niishin, pane ka mii gwem Anishinaabemowin.

Miigwech!
