Bays face Raiders in boys basketball opener

BRIMLEY — It was a win the hard way.

The Bays beat the DeTour Raiders 54-53 on Dec. 12, but the win was not a certainty until the final seconds of the game.

Brimley led at the end each quarter, but just barely. They were up 14-10 after the first period, but DeTour closed the gap and kept the pressure on the Bays. Brimley finished each of the periods with only a one-point lead, 26-25 and 36-35.

“Our free throws were key in this game. We made ours and DeTour didn't,” Coach Reg Robbins said.

Jake Parish led scoring with 11 points, Albert Bertram followed with 10, and Derek Beseau scored nine points and led in rebounds.

“We got all our jitters out,” Beseau said after the game.

Brimley also traveled to beat Superior Central 55-51 on Dec. 13 in another closely contested match, coming from behind in the last period.

“We played well in the third,” Robbins said, “but we got as far as 14 points behind.”

Coach looks forward on season

They may have two wins under their belt, but the Bay's season in still young, and Coach Robbins intends to keep improving his team.

“I want us to improve our shooting, both from the floor and our free throws.” Robbins said. He added that he would like his players to sustain the intensity of their defense, saying that it was not consistent in the two games.

Robbins is confident about his teams' chances this year, but he is realistic.

“We are in the hunt for the conference,” Robbins declared.

“Cedarville will be the team to beat,” Robbins said, noting the five-year conference champions, but added that Pickford will be a challenge as well.

The Bays travel to Newberry on Friday to face the Indians.
