Posen downs Brimley in close match

BRIMLEY — It was an even match-up between the Brimley Bays and the Posen Vikings in their Feb. 2 volleyball match, but the Vikings managed to get the best of the Bays in three sets.

Posen jumped off to an early lead in the first set, hitting the Bays for eight points while not allowing return shots. Brimley, however, rallied back tying the set up at 9-9 and then pushing on to a 14-9 lead over the Vikings.

Brimley's advantage faltered and Posen tied the score up at 14-14 and then pulled ahead to 15-14. The Bays regained the lead and took the set 17-15.

Posen handily took the next set, dropping Brimley 15-8.

The final set was much more contentious, as the Bays hammered out a solid 11-6 lead before facing a strong Viking comeback. Posen erased Brimley's lead and denied the Bays any further points, going on to win the set and match 15-11.

“This was a tough match to drop,” Bays Coach Jackie Leapley said about the game. “I felt the girls played very well overall and kept in the match mentally after we lost a player to injury.”

Brimley's Candice Leapley was helped off the court in the second set after a fall that paralyzed her leg. Coach Leapley said the next day that Candice's injury was not serious, as she landed on a nerve and that her paralysis was temporary.

“I was proud of their efforts especially Jessie Singleton who stepped into Candice's spot and Carrie Aikens who played all around very well,” Coach Leapley also said.

Aikens had four kills and two aces during the match, and Leapley also had four kills. Meghan Routhier led aces with five, Molly McIntyre had three kills and an ace and Jessica Singleton had two kills and an ace.

The loss brings the Bays to a 7-11-6 record for the season, coming off the Onaway Tourney on Jan. 31 and a win over DeTour on Jan. 29.

The Bays dropped DeTour 15-6, 15-5 on the Raiders' court. McIntyre scored eight kills and two aces during the match, and Leapley landed three kills and three aces.

“I was very proud of the girls efforts and positive attitudes they had in this match,” Coach Leapley said. “They picked themselves up from a disappointing loss to Engadine and played excellent volleyball.”

Brimley travels to Newberry to face the Indians on Feb. 5 and then faces Cedarville in a rematch at home on Feb. 12.
