Bake Sale Feb. 12 — A bake sale fundraiser for the Child Development Center will take place at the Ellen Marshall Center beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Try out for local musical on Feb. 12 — Audition for the musical “You're a Good Man Charlie Brown” to be presented by the Sault Community Theater. Four adult men and two adult females are needed. Auditions will be held at the Quality Inn in Sault, Mich., on Feb. 12 starting at 6:30 p.m. Sponsored by Bay Mills Indian Community, produced by Colleen Lavey, and directed by Thersa Zednicek. Volunteers for stage crew, sets and other work also needed — come try your hand at someting new! Teens welcome. Call Colleen Lavey, 632-7090, with any questions.

Free Computer Class at the Bay Mills Library Feb. 14 — On Sat., Feb. 14, the class “How to set up an email account on yahoo.com and hotmail.com” will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Bay Mills Library located on the BMCC campus. The class is free. Learn how to send free Valentines. Coffe and snacks will be served. Call Karen or Doris, 248-3354, ext. 4202, with any questions.

Seniors meet Feb. 17 — A Bay Mills Indian Community Senior's meeting will begin at 1 p.m., Feb. 17, at the Senior Center. The agenda is bingo. Call Mickey Parish, 248-3354, or Geraldine Parish, 248-3204, with any other topics or items for discussion.

Healthy Start Baby Celebration Feb. 18 — Join us in celebrating all the new babies born in 2003, on Wednesday, Feb. 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bay Mills Resort & Casino's Horizon's Conference Center.

Traditional Healing first week of each month — Traditional Healer Jake Pine is available at the Bay Mills Health Center the first full week of each month. To schedule an appointment, call the health center at 906-248-5527.

WIC office at Bay Mills last Tuesday of each month — Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a special food and nutrition program promotion good health and nutrition. Those who are pregnant, breast-feeding, postpartum, or with infants or children up to 5 may be eligible for WIC.

WIC income guidelines are: $22,422 for a family of two and $28,231 for a family of three. For each additional member add $5,809. (A pregnant woman and unborn baby equal a family of two.) The WIC office will be at the Armella B. Parker Senior Center on the last Tuesday of each month. Clinics are also located in Sault Avery Square and the Kinross Co-Op Mall. “Ask the Doctor” is Feb. 13

Friday, Feb. 13 is our second “Ask the Doctor” session starting at 3:30 p.m. in the Ellen Marshall Building lower level conference room. Diabetes topic to be announced.

Foot doctor available March 2 — Friday, March 2, is the next visit by Dr. Kendall Tabor, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Bay Mills Health Center. Please call 1-800-423-FOOT for an appointment. Call early — these appointment slots fill up fast!

Redeem Healthy Start incentive points by March 1 — The Bay Mills Healthy Start program regrets to announce the closing of its incentive program. Those families wishing to use their remaining points must call Joann or Gina at 248-3204 before March 1, 2004.

Well Woman Clinic March 10 — Our next Well Woman Clinic will be March 10 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. (Noon) at the Bay Mills Heatlh Center. Call 248-5527 for an appointment.

Gnoozhekaaning Cultural Center Events & Activities

The Gnoozhekaaning Cultural Center, on Tower Rd., is equipped with a large meeting room and kitchen facilities and is available for rent. Call the Cultural Center at 248-5852 for more information. If no one is available, please leave a message.

Men's Group — The Men's Group meets in the Cultural Building every other Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. The next meetings is Feb. 24. Please call James Roach, 248-5852, for information.

Women's Group — All women welcome. The Women's Group meets every other Wednesday. The next meetings are Feb. 25, beginning at 5 p.m. in the Cultural Center. The group has activities and other interesting items on its agenda.

Armchair Exercise — Monday, Wednesday and Friday 10:30a.m., Waishkey Center Gym. Improving Circulation, Flexibility and Strength is Important and Possible Regardless of Age. The Exercises We do Will Lessen Back and Leg Strain because They are Performed Sitting Down. Elders, Join Us for this Safe and Enjoyable Exercise. This class is free and open to the public.

Aerobics — Monday and Wednesday 11:30-12:30 p.m.; Tuesday and Thursday 4:45-5:45 p.m., Waishkey Center Gym. Registration and Program Fee Required

Adult Water Exercise — at Lake Superior State University, Monday-Wednesday 6-6:50 p.m.; Tuesday-Thursday, 10-10:50 a.m. Transportation is provided. Elders can be picked up and dropped off at their home. We will depart from the Waishkey Center 45 minutes before each class. Bay Mills Elders and their spouses are free. There will be a $1 fee for each class attended for everyone else. Please note that we will not participate in either class if there is not enough interest.

Prenatal and infant classes available

Congratulations, you're pregnant! Your community has put together a program of classes designed to help you have a healthy baby and positive birth experience.

EARLY PRENATAL CLASS: Dispel the myths, learn “what to expect when you're expecting:” Physical and emotional changes, common concerns, what to be aware of, what can and cannot hurt your baby, car seat safety, and lots more. This class is designed for early in pregnancy. The next two class series is scheduled for Feb. 19 and Feb. 26.

LAMAZE PREPARED CHILDBIRTH: Prepare for the birth of your baby and your role as a parent. Learn relaxation techniques, breathing patterns, and conditioning exercise presented, as well as the stages of labor, preparation, and child development. A new series of classes start monthly in 6-week or 4 week sessions. The next 6-week session is scheduled for Feb 23-March 29. The next 4-week session is scheduled for May 22-June 12.

SUCCESSFUL START TO BREASTFEEDING: Breastfeeding can be one of the most joyous experiences women will encounter as a new mother. Attend this class and learn to make breastfeeding a part of your lifestyle. This class is free! The next scheduled class is Feb. 25.

INFANT CPR & CHOKING CLASS: Learn the basics of lifesaving techniques for your infant. Receive the necessary training to help you in case of an emergency situation. This class is free! The next class is scheduled for Feb. 11.

CAR SEAT OPPORTUNITY! Those who attend the Early Prenatal and Lamaze Classes may purchase a Fisher Price Safe Embrace car seat for only $20 (retail price $120).

All classes are held monthly at the Chippewa County Health Department in the Avery Square. If you would like more information on any of theses classes or would like to sign up for one, please call the Chippewa County Health Department 635-3572.

Notice to people who had lot in Spectacle Village

From the Bay Mills Land Office

This notice is to inform you that the property/lot you were issued for residential use in Spectacle Village in 1999 has reverted back to the Bay Mills Indian Community.

On Feb. 5, 2001, at a General Tribal Council meeting, the members adopted the Ordinance Regulating the Issuance of Residential and Commercial Leases on the Reservation of the Bay Mills Indian Community. Section 6 of this ordinance states that a member has two years from the date they are granted uses of the property to work towards obtaining a residential lease. A residential lease will only be issued when there is confirmation of the construction of a primary residence in process.

Individuals in Spectacle Village were given until March 3, 2003, to be able to show that construction of their primary residence was in process. Notice was given to all land use holders both by mail and in the Bay Mills News of the ordinance and time frame.

You may request land again through the Bay Mills Indian Reservation Land Office. The office is located in the building of the Bay Mills Housing Authority. Please remember that all requests must be in writing. All requests are date and time stamped and your name will be placed on the waiting list in the order received.

Housing Authority annual performance report available for review

The Bay Mills Indian Community Housing Authority has completed its annual performance report (APR). In compliance with 24 CFR 1000. 51 8, the report is available for review. Any interested person may review and comment upon the APR at the Housing Authority office at 3095 S. Towering Pines Rd, Brimley, MI, 49715 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The APR will be submitted to HUD on Feb. 27, 2004.
