“Fun Funds” at GFS Marketplace
The Ojibwe Charter School Parent/Teacher Organization and Gordon Food Service (GFS) in Sault Ste. Marie are teaming up to bring you “Fun Funds,” a fundraising program to raise valuable dollars for school activities. GFS will send Ojibwe Charter School a monthly rebate check based on a percentage of purchases by members during the month.
This program is open to the public and no membership fee is required. All you have to do is visit GFS in Sault Ste. Marie and tell them you want to enroll in “Fun Funds” to benefit the Ojibwe Charter School PTO and start shopping.
Babysitting course
Healthy Start along with other departments in the Community is starting plans for the summer Babysitting course. Tentative plans are for the third week in August. Watch for further announcements. Attention All Bike Riders
The Bay Mills Safe Kids Coalition will not hold a bike rodeo this year. In conjunction with May's Safe Bike Month, the Coaltion will display information on safe riding and bicycle helmets in the Bay Mills Medical Center's lobby area.
With all this information available, the Bay Mills Law Enforcement has agreed to work with the Coalition to issue tickets to all young people who are seen wearing their helmets.
Each ticket will enable the responsible bike rider a chance to win a new bike in a drawing to be held in August. The more tickets issued to each rider, the better chance there is of winning a bike.

Brimley Schools 2004 distinguished alumni nominees sought
Nominations are now being accepted for the Brimley Area Schools 2004 Distinguished Alumni Award. Nominating letters should include the year the nominee graduated, accomplishments, awards and any other special recognition. Art Entries Sought
After the Fall: the Bonifas Arts Center in Escanaba invites entries for its “After the Fall: Agrarian Landscapes in a Post Industrial Society” Exhibit. Upper Peninsula artists 18 and older may submit up to three entries in any media, between June 22 and July 6. Exhibition dates are July 15 through Aug. 26. Coloring Book line art sought
Chippewa County Historical Society Coloring Book Project — Twenty black and white drawings on spcified local historic themes will be compiled into a coloring book by the Chippewa County Historical Society, which invites submissions for thos projects. The deadlines for submission is June 1, 2004. Drawing should be 8 x 10 in size and in black ink on white paper. Artists will be warded $50 for each drawing selected for publication. The project is funded by a grant from the Michigan Council for the Arts and Cultural Affiars. April 14: Annual Diabetes Alert Day at Bay Mills Resort and Casino Horizon's Conference Center from 9 a.m. to noon. This is a free service available to everyone in the community.
April 16: Mdewakanton Dakota Diabetic Neuropathy Study, Free Diabetic eye Exams, Friday
On Friday, April 16, doctors from the Mayo Clinic Medical Center will be at the Mayo Clinic Trailer next to the Prairie Island Community Center, 1158 Island Boulevard, Welch, Minn. The physicians will provide free eye exams, laboratory testing, examinations for diabetic neuropathy, EKG testing of the heart, and diet information as part of the Mdewakanton Dakota Diabetic Neuropathy Study.
There is no charge for any of the examinations, but patients will be asked to sign a consent form and provide diet information. Free prescriptions for eyeglasses will also be provided. Exams will take 2 hours to complete.
Reimbursements for mileage can be provided for car pool groups. Any individual with Native American heritage or their family members are welcome to participate. Individuals do not need to have diabetes or membership in a tribe to participate. Call Prairie Island Community Center at 651-385-4148 to schedule an appointment.

Learn to shear your own sheep May 14
Learn to shear your sheep at the upcoming shearing school planned for the Eastern UP on Friday, May 14, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Expert shearer Jim Bristol will cover shearing, sheep handling, wool handling, equipment set up and care, and sharpening combs and cutters. The one-day seminar will take place at the Wallis Farm in Rudyard.

The Citizen's Alliance to Uphold Special Education (CAUSE) meets every third Thursday of the month at the Waishkey Center from 6:30-8 p.m. There will be plenty of time to answer any questions. Refreshments will be served.

Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a special food and nutrition program promotion good health and nutrition. Those who are pregnant, breast-feeding, postpartum, or with infants or children up to 5 may be eligible for WIC.
The WIC office will be at the Armella B. Parker Senior Center on the last Tuesday of each month. Clinics are also located in Sault Avery Square and the Kinross Co-Op Mall.

The Exercises We do Will Lessen Back and Leg Strain because They are Performed Sitting Down. Elders, Join Us for this Safe and Enjoyable Exercise. This class is free and open to the public.

ADULT WATER EXERCISE — at Lake Superior State University, Monday Wednesday 6-6:50 p.m.; Tuesday-Thursday, 10-10:50 a.m. Transportation is provided. Elders can be picked up and dropped off at their home. We will depart from the Waishkey Center 45 minutes before each class. Bay Mills Elders and their spouses are free. There will be a $1 fee for each class attended for everyone else. Please note that we will not participate in either class if there is not enough interest.
The following field trips will be offered through the Little Traverse Conservancy this spring. The trips are open to the public and offered at no charge unless otherwise indicated. Pre-registration is requested by calling 231-347-0991.

She will guide us through the biology and beauty of this wonderful natural area using a full sensory style of interpretation.

Robert H. “Bob” Gage, 73, formerly of the Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. area, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at home. He was a resident of Zephyrhills, Fla. Arrangements will be announced by Hovie Funeral Home.
