BAY MILLS — The Bay Mills Executive Council met Monday, April 12, with all council members present.
General Assistance/Intake Worker Shelly LeBlanc addressed the council concerning an eligibility plan for the General Assistance (GA) program. Under current eligibility guidelines, only unemployable people are able to receive GA. LeBlanc proposed that the council allow employable people to receive assistance as well, pending funding from the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).
A contract with Sault Ste. Marie attorney, Monica Lubiarz-Quigley, for prosecutorial services was approved by the council. Lubiarz-Quigley's experience with tribal law and child welfare cases make her ideal for this position, according to Bay Mills Tribal Attorney Kathryn Tierney. The new lawyer maintains a private practice in Sault Ste. Marie and will be on retainer for court appearances and consultation with Bay Mills.
The council voted unanimously to approve a travel request, future tribal membership for an infant, a raffle license and a liquor license for Wild Bluff Golf Course.
A senior citizen requesting a senior home was directed to the Bay Mills Housing Authority.
The council approved membership in the Michigan Indian Elders Council and the National Tribal Air Association.
They approved a contract for Quality Improvement/Risk Management Coordinator Char Hewitt.
The Bay Mills Pow Wow Committee submitted a revised budget, requesting funds from the council for the 13th annual Honoring Our Veterans Competition Pow Wow to be held June 12 and 13. The Pow Wow Committee's budget was approved with a slight decrease.
The council reaffirmed phone votes en masse, including approval of the donation committee recommendations, a gaming waiver, a job waiver, two residential land leases and a lease cancellation.
