Name the Conservation Boat
Submit names for the conservation boat and you can win $100 for the winning name. The name can be in Ojibwe or English. If the entry is in Ojibwe, the English translation must be included.
All entries must be submitted to the conservation office, located in the Waiska building, no later than July 23.
The winning entry will be painted on the bow of the boat.

Softball teams wanted
Ho-Chunk Nationıs Seventh Annual All Nations Co-Ed Softball Tournament will be held Friday to Sunday, Sept. 3-5, at the Jackson County Fairgrounds in Black River Falls, Wisc. The tournament will be held in conjunction with Ho-Chunk Nationıs Labor Day contest powwow.
The first 16 teams to pay the $275 entry fee are eligible to compete for the $3,500 first prize, $2,500 second prize and $1,500 first prize. Additionally, the two teams travelling the farthest receive $500 and $275, respectively.
Teams must be signed up by Aug. 27 and schedules will be randomly drawn on Aug. 29.

Babysitting class to be held Aug. 9-13
The Child/Babysitting Class is now scheduled! It will be held the week of Aug. 9 to 13, and will be open to ages 11 and up.
It will be a on first-come-first-served basis.
This yearıs class will include CPR certification and many other interesting topics to make child/babysitting safe and fun time.

Free drinking water testing
Individuals with private wells are eligible to get free drinking water screening for Triazine pesticides, nitrites and nitrates.
Test bottles and instructions are available from Chippewa County MSU Extension, 300 Court St., Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., 49783. You can pick up your bottles Monday, July 12, until Friday, July 16, between the hours of 9 a.m to 4 p.m.
To have accurate test results, samples must be drawn on July 19 and delivered to our office before 1 p.m.

Fun stuff at food coop
Those who want natural and organic food, who have food allergies or other special food requirements, and are willing to do a little extra work to get lower prices, can join the Beautiful Leaf Food Cooperative of Sault, Mich., made up of local residents, from both sides of the border. The coop also has the ability to purchase non-grocery items such as personal care products, cleaning products, fun stuff like beeswax candles and incense, and even kitty litter.

VFW Raffle Winners
June 15 winners of the VFW Raffle were Roger Skow of Dafter winning $100 (his third time this drawing period) and Marica White of Sault, Mich., winning $25.

“Fun Funds” at GFS Marketplace
The Ojibwe Charter School Parent/Teacher Organization and Gordon Food Service (GFS) in Sault Ste. Marie are teaming up to bring you “Fun Funds,” a fundraising program to raise valuable dollars for school activities. GFS will send Ojibwe Charter School a monthly rebate check based on a percentage of purchases by members during the month.
This program is open to the public and no membership fee is required. All you have to do is visit GFS in Sault Ste. Marie and tell them you want to enroll in “Fun Funds” to benefit the Ojibwe Charter School PTO and start shopping.
Tribal Court website now available
Visit the new Bay Mills Tribal Court website at http://www.bay-mills.org/tribalcourt. The website contains information on tribal court operations, court fees, and different types of cases. The website also contains the first 18 chapters of the Bay Mills Court Tribal Code.

Congratulations, you're pregnant!
Your community has put together a program of classes designed to help you have a healthy baby and positive birth experience.
Early Prenatal Class: Dispel the myths, learn “what to expect when you're expecting:” Physical and emotional changes, common concerns, what to be aware of, what can and cannot hurt your baby, car seat safety, and lots more. This class is designed for early in pregnancy. The next class series is scheduled for June 24.
Lamaze Prepared Childbirth: Prepare for the birth of your baby and your role as a parent. Learn relaxation techniques, breathing patterns, and conditioning exercise presented, as well as the stages of labor, preparation, and child development. A new series of classes start monthly in 6-week or 4-week sessions. The next 6-week session is scheduled for June 14 July 26. The next 4-week session is scheduled for Sep. 18-Oct. 9.
Successful Start to Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding can be one of the most joyous experiences women will encounter as a new mother. Attend this class and learn to make breastfeeding a part of your lifestyle. This class is free! The next scheduled class is June 23.
Infant CPR & Choking Class: Learn the basics of lifesaving techniques for your infant. Receive the necessary training to help you in case of an emergency situation. This class is free! The next class is scheduled for July 14.
Car Seat Opportunity! Those who attend the Early Prenatal and Lamaze Classes may purchase a Fisher Price Safe Embrace car seat for only $20.

Michigan Indian Family Olympics July 16
The 17th annual Michigan Indian Family Olympics is slated for Friday, July 16, at Central Michigan University's Bennett Track. Registration and check-in for the 2004 games starts at 7 a.m. with opening ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring a tent for shade, and a tribal banner or flag from participants' tribe or organization to display throughout the ceremony.

Ladies Night July 15
Ladies Night will be held Thursday, July 15, from 2 to 8 p.m., at the Chippewa County Health Department. Offering free evaluation for breast and cervical cancer, breast exams, pap tests and mammograms, the event is open to all women ages 40 to 64 who are income eligible.
Income guidelines for free exams are $23,275 for a family of one and $31,225 for a family of two (add $7,850 for each additional family member). Deductible and co-pays covered from other insurance.
Many fun activities and prizes are planned.

Celebrating our Anishnaabek Family Community Picnic
NACS - Healthy Start will host the Celebrating our Anishnaabek Family Community Picnic Wednesday, July 21 from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Millennium Park Shelter A, located at 1415 Maynard Ave SW, Grand Rapids, Mich. (call NACS for directions).

Childrens' diabetes camp to be held Aug. 19-20
A camp for children, ages 5 to 13, with diabetes, their family and friends, will be held at Northern Michigan University, Thursday and Friday, Aug. 19 to 20.
Parents will have the opportunity to meet as a group and discuss concerns while children participate in games and educational activities. Evening events include swimming, using a rock climbing wall and exhibits from insulin, meter and pump companies.
Participants will spend the night in NMU dorms &mdash one parent is required to spend the night, also.
Tentative costs for the program are $100 for the child with diabetes, plus two parents or guardians &mdash at least one parent or guardian must be present for the child to participate &mdash and $50 for each additional child (friend or sibling). Fundraising is being conducted to reduce these costs. Costs include all meals, snacks, activities and housing.
Scholarships are available.
The deadline for registration is Aug. 13.

Thursday, July 8, at 6:30p.m., Howard Webkamigad will be the guest speaker at a cultural presentation entitled “Preserving the Ojibwe Language.”
