Fireworks crew risks danger for spectacular pyrotechnic display

BAY MILLS — Due to rain, this year's annual Fourth of July celebration at the Bay Mills ballfield was postponed until the fifth. The crew that was responsible for the spectacular display of fireworks said everything ran smoothly and safely. [more]



Fate of newly-acquired Culture Lodge unknown

BAY MILLS — Some call it the Bay Mills Cultural Lodge, others the Bay Mills Learning and Language Center; some still refer to it as the Iroquois Inn. One thing is for certain, the Bay Mills Indian Community's newly-acquired 11,000 square foot, 73 acre property is large enough to entertain any possibility. The only problem seems to be that everyone has their own idea of how the property should be used. [more]



Community Picnic to be held July 31

The Boys and Girls Club of Bay Mills is pleased to announce that the Annual Bay Mills Community Picnic will be held Saturday, July 31, from 5 to 10 p.m. [more]



Students gather for cultural presentation

BAY MILLS — Students from the Bay Mills Community College Language Institute met at the newly-acquired Cultural Lodge, formerly the Iroquois Inn, on Wednesday, June 30. The 15 students were addressed by Barb Nolan, J.P. Montano, and Ted Holappa. Nolan, who quit speaking the English language on Christmas Day, addressed the students entirely in the Native language. Vandals strike Bay Mills ballfield

BAY MILLS — The bathrooms at the Bay Mills ballfield have fallen victim to a series of vandalism taking place throughout the summer. According to Parks and Recreation Maintenance Supervisor Hank Bowen, it is a problem that has been on the rise for the last five years. [more]



Crime of the Week: home invasions

SAULT STE. MARIE — Michigan State Police are investigating a series of home invasions on the north end of Sugar Island near Sault Ste. Marie in Chippewa County. [more]



Recreation Department to offer running club

BAY MILLS — The Bay Mills Department of Recreation and Health Promotion started the Bay Mills Running Club on July 12, for beginners to advanced runners, ages 13 and up. Training sessions are held every Monday and Wednesday at 10 a.m., and every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Participants do not have to attend all sessions. [more]



MSU Extension asks, “What's so good about cutting trees?”

Many times you can hear phrases such as; “The woods needs thinning” or “Cutting trees helps the forest stay healthy.” How can this be? It would seem that cutting trees can't possibly be good for a forest. [more]

Sea lamprey control planned for St. Marys River

CHIPPEWA COUNTY — The battle against sea lampreys by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service continues as biologists and technicians conduct work on the St. Marys River in Chippewa County, according to a recent release. [more]



Shelldrake State Forest Campground closed for the season

PARADISE — Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials recently announced Shelldrake State Forest campground in the Lake Superior State Forest, Chippewa County, closed July 12 to remove hazard trees. [more]
