
Traditional berry valuable to good health

Cranberries are one of only three fruits native to North America (blueberries and Concord grapes are the other two). When the Pilgrims arrived in the New World, the Wampanog Indians greeted them with goodwill gifts of this fruit, which they called ibimi, meaning bitterberries. The shape of the plant's small pink flowers reminded the colonists of a crane's head, so they referred to them as craneberries. Eventually the name was shortened to cranberry. [more]
