Waswagoning group works to educate people on Native culture

The Waswagoning Dance Theatre of Lac du Flambeau, Wisc., hit the stage of Bay Mills Resort and Casino's Horizon's Conference Center on Saturday, April 16, performing two shows for tribal members and casino guests.
Ojibwe Cultural Consultant Nick Hockings led the all Native group on their first journey to the area. Amidst lights and fog Hockings said he hopes the artistic emphasis on the dance provided a whole new spiritual atmosphere for the audience. [more]

Mackinac Historic Parks may lose state funding

In an effort to balance the state budget, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm has proposed a $1.5 million cut in funding for Mackinac State Park Commission, including facilities on Mackinac Island. Poll shows support for higher minimum wage

By a nearly 3-to-1 margin, Michigan voters expressed support for Democratic legislation to increase the state's minimum wage from $5.15 an hour to $7.15 an hour, according to a March poll commissioned by “Inside Michigan Politics.” [more]

Emergency order signed banning campfires, open burning in DNR-managed lands

Michigan Department of Natural Resources Director Rebecca Humphries, on Wednesday, April 13, signed an emergency order to ban campfires and open burning in any DNR-managed lands. Humphries signed the order at the request of DNR Forest, Fire Management and Minerals division, citing the “very high” level of fire danger in nearly all of Michigan. The order is in effect until Humphries rescinds it. [more]
