BMPD looking for bike helmet-wearers
The Bay Mills Police Department (BMPD) officers will be on the lookout to see how many kids are using their bicycle helmets. If you are seen wearing your helmet while riding your bike by a BMPD officer, your name will be put into a drawing for a new bicycle. The drawing will take place in August. Bay Mills Elders wanted
The Bay Mills Substance Abuse program is looking for Bay Mills elders to volunteer to have area youth perform community service at their homes. Mackinac Bridge Cruises
Join the St. Ignace Visitor's Bureau and the Mackinac Island ferries on a sunset cruise under the Mackinac Bridge. This one-and-one-half hour narrated tour begins in June and July at 8:30 p.m., and in August at 8 p.m., every Monday night. The cost is $15 per person; children under 5 are free of charge. Join the St. Ignace Ministerial Association in July and August for worship and spectacular views. All vesper cruises depart from the St. Ignace Arnold Transit dock. 5th Annual "Tour of Gardens"
The Friends of Caring Animal Shelter (FOCAS) is sponsoring the 5th Annual "Tour of Gardens" to be held Saturday, July 9, from 12 to 4 p.m. Four gardens will be featured, including the Soo Locks gardens, designed by the Sault Garden Club. Tickets are $12 and will be available starting June 25 at The Mole Hole, At Home Gift Gallery, Weber's Floral and Gift and Country Road Greenhouse. Blood drive slated for June 24
The American Red Cross will be hosting a blood drive sponsored by Sault Tribe at the Sault Tribe Health Center in Sault Ste. Marie on June 24 from 11 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. This drive is open to the public. For more information on donating blood call 1-800-582-2240 ext. 102.
MS Walk to be held June 25 in Traverse City
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society will hold the final of their 15 annual walks around the state on June 25 in Traverse City. The walk is six miles long and begins at 9 a.m. Registration for the event begins at 8 a.m. at the Grand Traverse Civic Center. Each year thousands of individuals walk from two to 12 miles to help raise funds towards the support of at least 16,000 individuals who have been diagnosed with MS. Funds provide programs, services and research into the disease.
"River Rampage" street party set for June 10
On Friday, June 10, Downtown Sault Ste. Marie will be buzzing with music and boats as the Soo kicks off the second annual "River Rampage" boat races with a downtown street party. Starting at 6:30 p.m., the event will last until 11 p.m., and is free to the public. Portage Avenue, between Ashmun Street and Gov. Osborn Boulevard, will be closed for the street party. Portage Avenue businesses will offer outdoor seating and service. Starting at 6:30 p.m., Hogan's Goat, Phat Tuesday, and Nuclear Renaissance will entertain the crowds. At 7 p.m., rampage boats and race crews will visit downtown to meet and greet area residents. Disaster Training class to be offered June 25
The American Red Cross recently assisted victims of disaster in Florida and Asia. Did you know the Red Cross also assists victims of disaster in the Eastern Upper Peninsula? And, you can help. The Chippewa County Chapter - American Red Cross is offering "Introduction to Disaster" training Saturday, June 25, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Huntington Bank at 511 Ashmun St., in Sault Ste. The Bay Mills Indian Community will be hosting its 14th Annual Honoring Our Veterans Competition Pow Wow on June 10-12 at the Bay Mills ball field. There will be over $14,000 in dance prize money. Men's Health Week
Men's Health Week will be held June 13 to 19. The goal is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease in men and boys. Men's Health Week gives health care providers, public policy makers, the media and individuals an opportunity to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease and injury. The Cultural Center will host a craft circle the last Monday of each month. The craft circle is open to anyone and everyone who wishes to share their knowledge and teachings on their crafts.
