Kids reminded to wear bike helmets
The Bay Mills Safe Kids Coalition and Healthy Start Program would like to remind parents to keep kids safe especially with school just around the corner. Law enforcement officers are still on the look out for all kids wearing their helmets. Names will be submitted to a new bike drawing that is slated to take place Friday, Sept. 2, at 4 p.m. For more information call Healthy Start Nurse Joann LeBlanc at 906-248-5527.

Farmer's market held each Wednesday
Each Wednesday evening, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., a farmer's market will be held at the city lot on the corner of Ashmun and Maple. The items most likely to be offered are fresh produce, baked breads, eggs, fresh and frozen fish, meats and chicken, fruits, and honey and maple syrup. Street musicians are needed to perform during the market; call Jim at 906-635-6368, for more information. The farmer's market is sponsored by the Sault Ste. Marie Downtown Development Authority, MSU Extension and Big North Farmer's Cooperative.

Old newspaper sought
Paul Munz is seeking a copy of the October 2000 issue of Bay Mills News for his collection. Anyone who can contribute a copy of this paper to him should call 906-248-5701.

Booster Club raising funds
The Brimley Booster Club is seeking more community involvement from parents of Brimley athletes, fans and alumni. The booster club is trying to raise $14,000 for the Brimley Area Schools Athletics Program, which is the estimated cost of busing athletes to games each year. If they do not meet this goal, athletes may have to pay to play.

SCHEDULED EVENTS

Executive Council to host informational meetings
Bay Mills Executive Council is hosting a series of meetings for tribal members to voice their questions or concerns. Meetings scheduled will meet in the Horizons Conference Center at Bay Mills Resort and Casino from 6 to 8 p.m. Meeting dates are: Sept. 21, and Oct. 19.

Quilting Bee to be held Aug. 27
The Bay Mills Charity Quilters will be making quilts on Saturday, Aug. 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Waishkey Center Gymnasium. The group will be making quilts to donate to local emergency medical service departments. Anyone interested in helping out can call Dotty at 906-437-4313.

Which football team owns the Eastern Upper Peninsula?
The Chippewa County American Red Cross will hold Gameday 2005 at the Elks Club on 1111 E. Portage Ave., Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday, Aug. 27. Fans of the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers are encouraged to come out and determine which team has more fans (and tailgate for a good cause). Rob Rubick, Detroit Lions Fox Sports Net commentator and Newberry native, will be guest speaker. Tickets are $25 and include a teriyaki chicken dinner plus the chance to win tickets to the Lions-Packers game on Sept. 11, or Detroit Lions tickets, or to meet Steve Yzerman and the Detroit Red Wings at their training camp in Traverse City. United Way Chili Cookoff
The 4th annual Local Heroes United Way Chili Cookoff will be held Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Northern Hospitality parking lot in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. This event kicks off the 2005-2006 United Way Campaign. Their goal this year is to raise $365,000. Live music by George Snider and Dave Stanaway. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 5 to 12.

Gospel Concert to benefit United Way
The 4th Annual Chippewa County Fair Gospel Concert is planned for Sunday, Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free but a free will offering will benefit United Way of Chippewa County. Local music by First Congregational Church of Brimley, and First Church of Christ and Free Methodist Church, both of Sault Ste. Marie, Also, nationally known country and gospel artist Kali Rose will perform, sponsored by Hovie Funeral Home.

Democrats to meet Aug. 27
Chippewa County Democrats will meet Saturday, Aug. 27, at 10 a.m., at the Country Kitchen Restaurant, 2644 I-75 Business Spur in Sault Ste Marie (front of K-mart parking lot). For more information contact treasurer Paul Warrick at 906 495-7343, or visit www.chippewadems.com.

Softball tournament to be held Labor Day weekend
There will be a softball tournament to benefit the Bay Mills Township Fire and Rescue on Labor Day weekend (Saturday and Sunday). Men, women and mixed teams are welcome. The cost is $100 per team. Three home run rule; 10 after five, and 20 after three mercy rules. No more than three red division players per team. We'll have concession, beer tent and trophies for first, second and third places. WIC office at Bay Mills
The WIC office will be at the Armella B. Parker Senior Center on the fourth Thursday of each month. Call 635-3572 for an appointment.

Well Woman Clinic
The next Well Woman Clinic will be held at the Bay Mills Health Center on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Call 906-248-5527 to schedule an appointment.

Cultural Committee
The Cultural Committee meets the third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m., at the Bay Mills Cultural Lodge. Community welcome. In the event of foul weather, the committee will meet in the Bay Mills courtroom.
