Sesquicentennial closing ceremonies renew call for lock expansion



SAULT STE. MARIE - While closing ceremonies commemorating the end to the Soo Locks Sesquicentennial Celebration were held on Friday, Sept. 2, those in attendance, including Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm focused on the future of the Soo Locks.

Gov. Granholm, joined by Sen. Carl Levin, D- MI, U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak, D- 1st District, and State Rep. Gary McDowell, D-Rudyard, renewed talk of expanding the locks to an eager crowd.

Brimley granary to be restored into museum

Plans to develop a museum in the old granary building have made progress since local historians first conceived the idea in 2003. The building is located at the corner of Brimley's main street and Railroad Street. [more]
