BAY MILLS - Bay Mills Police Department recently filled one of their vacant police officer positions on Aug. 22, with the hiring of Nick Bertram. Bertram, a Bay Mills member, will be spending a couple of weeks on the day shift learning the ropes with a senior officer before going to the night shift full-time. According to BMPD Captain Kurt Perron, Bertram was selected from a pool of several highly qualified applicants.
"It was definitely a tough decision to make, but I'm confident we made the right one," Perron said of his decision to hire Bertram. "This job could have easily gone to one or two different people. So far [Bertram] has not disappointed. His eagerness to learn and his desire to prove he is a valuable asset to our department and community is very commendable."
The 22-year-old Bertram is a 2001 graduate of Brimley Area Schools. He attended LSSU after high school, where he recently graduated with a bachelors of science in criminal justice. He completed his Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards training in June. With his new job, Bertram said he has fulfilled a lifelong dream of his - becoming a police officer. With his education and training, he feels he has a lot to offer the community.
"I've always wanted to go into law enforcement," Bertram said. "It's an exciting career with many different opportunities to help people. I hope to make a positive impact on the community."
Since he was born and raised in the area, Bertram said most people know what kind of person he is and what they can expect of him. For those that do not know him and for those that do, Bertram said they can expect one thing from him when he dons his uniform - fairness.
"I promise to be very impartial," he said. "There will be no favoritism with me. I will treat everyone fairly, regardless of who they are, or who they are related to."
