John Bowen painting donated to Bay Mills

This painting (ca.1960) by the late John Bowen Sr., was donated to Bay Mills Indian Community on August 10, 2005, by Kenneth Routhier of the Port Huron area. It was a wedding present given to him by his parents, Ken and Elean Routhier. Routhier remembers that John didn't want to put a deer in it as he did not like painting animals.

John Bowen (1900-1989), although a chef by trade, was most well known for his paintings. He always dabbled but began to take it more seriously after having raised his family of 10 children (ca. 1950s). His paintings became so popular that he once said that he had a painting in every state in U.S. One was even given to Johnny Cash as a gift.
