BAY MILLS - Friends and family of the late Jason "Farley" Lyons, and various members of the community, honored his memory at the inaugural "Jason Lyons Memorial Golf Scramble" on Sept. 15, at the Wild Bluff Golf Course. The event, organized by the Bay Mills Police Department, raised $3,414 for Lyons' young sons, Jace and Orion. The two brothers were left fatherless when Lyons was fatally stabbed during an altercation at a party on Sept. 10, last year. Beginning next year the event will take place on Sept. 10, the date of his passing.

The money raised from each annual golf scramble will go into a trust fund for Lyons' two sons. According to James Lyons, Jr., the boys will not be able to access the money until they are 18-years-old and go to college. If they do not attend college, they can receive the money when they turn 21.

Lyons, Jr., said that if his son were alive today he would have been very impressed with the way the community came together to help out his boys.

"Jason would have been very impressed with what went on here today," Lyons, Jr., said. "This was an exceptional idea. It's nice to know there are people out there who are this generous and compassionate, especially in a time like this. It means a lot to all of us."

Friends and family acknowledged that no matter how much money was raised from the scramble it would not be enough to bring him back. It could not replace what he meant to his boys as their father, nor could it replace what he meant to his father as a son. However, what it could do, they unanimously agreed, was to give family, friends, and anyone else who was affected by the life of Jason "Farley" Lyons, a reason to come out, have a good time and celebrate his life.

"This is a real nice way to honor him," Lyons, Jr., said of the first golf memorial for his son. "Farley would have had a blast; he played as much golf as he could afford to. [BMPD Capt. Kurt Perron and Officer Arlen Kuzmik] did an outstanding job putting this together. I'm already looking forward to next year."
