Memorial service honors Great Lakes mariners



WHITEFISH POINT - They each came for different reasons, from all parts of the country - some to honor the lives of those relatives and friends lost upon the Great Lakes, others to witness history. The mood was somber as those attending the annual Mariners Memorial witnessed the Call to Last Watch ceremony held at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Whitefish Point on Thursday, Nov. 10.

"Thirty years ago tonight the Edmund Fitzgerald was struggling," said Tom Farnquist, Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society director, in opening remarks. "What happened to the Fitzgerald? That questioned is still not answered today." [more]

Asian carp threaten Great Lakes fish

The Great Lakes are being threatened once again by invasive species; this time Asian carp are attempting to enter the water system. The fish, which was introduced to the Chicago area by flooding that overtook fish farms in Mississippi 10 years ago, is becoming the talk, as well as fear, of the fishing industry.

Asian carp are large fish, weighing on average 60 to 100 pounds and measuring up to four feet in length. [more]
