OCS Board of Directors discusses middle college

BAY MILLS - The Bay Mills Ojibwe Charter School Board of Directors met on Monday, Dec. 12 for a regularly scheduled meeting. Board member Terry Carrick was absent from the meeting. Mosaica, Education, Inc., Chief Operating Officer and co-founder Gene Eidelman were present.

OCS Program Facilitator Kathleen VanHouten addressed the board about her recent discussions over the benefits packages with Bay Mills Human Resources Director Kendal Perron. VanHouten said that she concluded the Bay Mills health care plan would be ideal for single families, but would not be so great for those with children. The comparison between the charter school's two plans and the Bay Mills plan is most notably a difference in out of pocket expenses. VanHouten said that OCS teachers are wanting to know how the health care coverage talks are going, and are already inquiring about the retirement package.

Mosaica Regional Vice President Bill Ignatowski said he did his research and found out that the school board gave $5,000 last spring for the charter schools legal fund. He requested an additional $5,000 to go to the "Coalition for Educational Choice." Even though a judge recently dismissed the Michigan Education Association's lawsuit with the state of Michigan over Bay Mills' ability to charter schools, the battle over charter schools is by no means over, he said.

Board member Aaron Tadgerson briefed Mosaica Education co-founder and COO Gene Eidelman on the middle-college concept. Parents who went to college are going to figure this out pretty quick, Tadgerson said. Tadgerson explained how the middle college would allow students to earn college credits and even earn an associates degree while attending high school.
