BAY MILLS - Bay Mills Community College recently received a donation of an 8.7-acre parcel of land from an anonymous donor. The waterfront property, valued at $142,000, borders current tribal land on the Back Bay, north of Bay Mills Resort and Casino, according to BMCC President Mickey Parish.
The college received a call out of the blue last summer from an individual who was interested in donating the parcel.
"He was tying up some family business and wanted to know if we were interested," said Parish. "Of course we said we would be."
The property officially changed hands on Nov. 15, after the college provided documentation to the donor concerning status as a nonprofit 501 (c)(3).
The donor, from the Newberry area, has donated other pieces of property to institutions in the area.
"They do good works," said Parish referring to him. "I am not sure how he heard about us."
The property will go into trust sometime in the near future, Parish predicted.
While the college is unsure of what the property will be used for, Parish expects the piece will be used ultimately for research and similar purposes.
"We are looking at our options as to what we will do with the piece, " said Parish. "We were very fortunate to be able to receive something like this."
