Tax-Aid available at Bayliss Public Library

SAULT STE. MARIE - AARP Tax-Aide is offering free tax counseling and tax preparation assistance at Bayliss Public Library and throughout Michigan for people of middle and low incomes, with special attention given to those ages 60 and over. AARP Tax-Aide volunteers are trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service and offer help with personal income tax returns at locations throughout Michigan.

In the Sault Ste. Marie area, AARP Tax-Aide counseling and return preparation will be done at Bayliss Public Library, 541 Library Drive, near the Ashmun Street Bridge. This free service will be offered on Thursdays in March, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., by appointment. Please call Tax Counselor, Jack Olson, at 906- 293-8467, to schedule an appointment. Return preparation takes about an hour with the taxpayer present to furnish needed information. Most returns will be able to be e-filed.

The Michigan Homestead Credit and the Michigan Home Heating Credit forms can be completed even if no state income tax is owed.

Millions of dollars in credits go unclaimed in Michigan when qualified residents fail to claim the Federal Earned Income Tax Credit. AARP Tax-Aide volunteers encourage residents to make appointments at the nearest AARP Tax-Aide center and have their individual circumstances assessed. Volunteers will be glad to address individual tax situations.

For more information about Tax-Aide and locations of Tax-Aide sites, call toll-free at: 1-888-AARP-NOW (1-888-227-7669) or visit the web site at www.aarp.org/taxaide. AARP Tax-Aide is administered through the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service.

Bayliss Public Library offers a selection of tax forms and instruction booklets for Federal and Michigan taxes. You may also print forms from the Tax Forms link on the library's home page www.uproc.lib.mi.us/bpl. For further information, you may call the library at 906- 632-9331.
