Animal shelter seeking donations
The Chippewa County Animal Shelter is in urgent need of the following items: cat litter (any brand, but please non-scoopable); kitten and cat food (dry, any brand); bleach; baking soda; litter boxes; litter box scoopers; dishwasher detergent; cat and dog treats; dog leashes (six feet or longer). Low Income Energy Assistance Program available
Low Income Energy Assistance is available. To apply you must bring all income-related documents for anyone over the age of 18 living in the household. Income includes wages, SSI, child support, FIA assistance, pension, unemployment, self-employment and GA assistance. Applications are being taken at the commodity food warehouse. If you receive assistance from the Family Independence Agency you must provide a denial letter from their office. The 2006 Inter-Tribal Council LIEAP income guidelines is as follows: one-person household - $21,404; two-person household - $27,990; three-person - $34,575; four-person -$41,161. GED classes offered at BMCC
GED stands for General Education Development and in order to obtain a GED certificate students will need to pass five basic skills tests, covering writing skills, social sciences, science, literature and mathematics.
GED preparation classes are offered at Bay Mills Community College in partnership with Consolidated Community School Services. This particular program averages 51 students per academic year. After preparing academically for the GED test, students will practice by taking sample tests. At this time an appointment date and time is made with the official test site for the GED test. In Michigan, a student must have a total minimum score of 2,250 points to obtain their GED. This means a student must score an average of 450 points on each test.
Students must be 18 years of age or older to enroll in this program. Classes are Monday through Thursday, 12 to 4 p.m., in the log cabin library on the BMCC campus. For many students a GED certificate can be their first step towards a better future.

TRIO plans winter carnival
On Wednesday, March 22, Bay Mills Community College's TRIO program will hold a winter carnival on the BMCC campus. The day starts off at 11 a.m. with a chili cook off. Participants in the taste test contribute $5 toward Hospice Special Olympics and the United Way. The college's Health and Fitness Club is sponsoring the carnival, which runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be several scheduled events and prizes awarded. The community is invited.
Beadwork class being held at Cultural Lodge
The Bay Mills Indian Community Gnoozhekaaning Cultural Program is holding a beadwork class each Monday at the Cultural Lodge from 6 to 9 p.m. Instructing the class will be Becky Munz. Everyone is welcome to join; children must be accompanied by an adult. A women's hand drum class will be held each Wednesday at the BMIC Cultural Lodge from 6 to 9 p.m. For more information call Lance Teeple at 906-437-4372.
Ann Arbor Pow wow set for late March
The 39th annual "Dance for Mother Earth" Ann Arbor Pow Wow will take place March 25 and 26 at the University of Michigan's Crisler Arena. The Native American Student Association and the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs at U of M are sponsoring the event. Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. On March 25, there will be two Grand Entries, one at 12 p.m. and the other at 7 p.m. On March 26, one Grand Entry will be held at 12 p.m.
Host Drum is Midnite Express from Minnesota; co-host Drum is High Spirit from Michigan; and Master of Ceremonies is Wallace Coffey from Oklahoma. Drum contest is by invitation only while dance contests are open to all with a $5 registration fee. Over $35,000 in prize money will be awarded. Pot Luck Feast to be held at Cultural Lodge
There will be a pot luck feast at the Bay Mills Cultural Center and Learning Lodge on Saturday, March 18, at 5 p.m. The dinner will be followed by a special appearance by guest speaker and Mille Lacs elder Skip Churchill, who will give cultural teachings.
Pow wow to be held at NMU
The 14th annual "Learning to Walk Together" traditional pow wow will be held on March 18 and 19 at Northern Michigan University's Vandament Arena.
The event is hosted by the NMU Native American Student Association. Dancers and singers from numerous tribes around the Great Lakes region will perform. For more information contact the NMU Center for Native American Studies at 906-227-1397.
Lion's Club hosting non-smoking bingo
Each Monday, the Lions Club will be hosting a non-smoking bingo at the Strongs Town Hall on M-28, three miles east of the Eckerman intersection, from 6:30 until 10:30 p.m. The kitchen will be open.
Eye appointment information provided
Tribal members who need to schedule an eye appointment should call Tweek at the Ellen Marshall Center at 906-248-5527 or 5578, ext. 3166. If Tweek is not available, please leave your name and phone number so she can call you back. Medicaid patients can set up their own appointment by calling Dr. Johnson at 906-635-9600. If you cannot make your eye appointment, please call Dr. Johnson's office or Tweek to cancel within 48 hours so that another patient can take your place. In the past month, there have been a lot of "no shows." Dr. Johnson may charge the patient for their time slot if they do not cancel within a 48-hour time period. Bay Mills CHS program will not cover this charge.

The WIC office will be at the Armella B. Parker Senior Center on the fourth Thursday of each month. Call 635-3572 for an appointment.
Wellness Clinics
The next Well Women's Clinic is scheduled for Tuesday, April 11. The next Well Man's Clinic will be held Tuesday, April 4. All clinics are at the Bay Mills Health Center and run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wendy Jamros, CFNP, and Craig Caldwell, D.O., will be available. Elders exercise classes
Monday, Wednesday and Friday - Men's class at 8 a.m., Women's class at 10:30 a.m. - Waishkey Center Gym
Improving circulation, flexibility and strength is important and possible regardless of age. The exercises that will be done will lessen back and leg strain because they are performed sitting down.
Elders are invited to join the group for this safe and enjoyable exercise. This class is free and open to the public.
Adult Water Exercise Classes are offered at Lake Superior State University Monday and Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 6:50 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10:50 a.m.
Transportation is provided. Elders can be picked up and dropped off at their home. We will be departing from the Waishkey Center 45 minutes before each class. Bay Mills Elders and their spouses are free. There will be a $1 fee for each class attended for everyone else.
Please note that we will not participate in either class if there is not enough interest.
