Michigan Indian Elders Association offering education incentives and scholarships

The Michigan Indian Elders Association will make available four $500 scholarships and one $1,000 scholarship to qualified students.

The scholarships will be awarded to five students with the $1,000 scholarship being awarded to the most qualified student as determined by committee review and lottery, if necessary.

Each student must be currently enrolled in a course of study at, or have a letter of acceptance from, a public college or university or technical school. Those applying must meet specific guidelines and must complete the provided application form and submit it with required supported documentation. The mailing must be received by the coordinator not later than June 19, 2006. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.

To obtain an application contact Geraldine Parish at 906-248-3241 or visit www.michiganindianelders.org for more information.

A student incentive program is also being offered by the Michigan Indian Elders Association to recognize students who achieve all "A's" for a marking period as well as students who achieve perfect attendance for a marking period.

The first two marking periods of this 2005/2006 school year (or the number of marking periods completed by March 1, 2006 for school systems having something other than four marking periods) will be used to determine the winners.

There will be a minimum of $3,000 available to fund this program this year. At $25 per award, there will be 120 winners who will be determined by lottery.

The drawing to determine the winners will be held at the April 2006 meeting of the Michigan Indian Elders Association at Petoskey, MI.

The completed application form, a signed report card or verification letter of achievement from a school administrator and copy of students or parent's tribal identification card must be received at the following address not later than April 1, 2006 :

Robert S. Menard, President
Michigan Indian Elders Association
