Lillian Wiser: the blueberry basket maker

 In 1936, at seven years of age, a young Lillian Wiser made the arduous journey from her home on Canada's Wikwemikong Indian Reserve to the United States. In search of a better life, Wiser, along with her parents and grandparents, settled in Strongs, Mich. As her father eked out a living for his family in the woods cutting and selling cordwood, Wiser learned the art of birch bark basket making and canoe making from her mother and grandmother, which they made to supplement her father's income. Carrick earns award
United States Forest Service Forestry Technician and Bay Mills tribal member Joe Carrick was recently awarded the Multicultural Organization Award for his work on the "Protectors of the Earth Program" on Sugar Island. [more]
Executive Council opposed to proposed sulfide mining operation by Kennecott

The council, subsequently passed resolution no. 06-3-27B, which stated: The Bay Mills Indian Community shares the conviction of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community that sulfide mining, and in particular the mine proposed by Kennecott Minerals, poses unacceptable risks to the water-rich environment of the Yellow Dog Plains. The Bay Mills Executive Council is concerned that the potential environmental impacts of the proposed Kennecott Mine are antithetical to the long-term protection of Lake Superior and its watershed and threatens the tribe's rights under the 1836 treaty.
