Navy rock band to make stop at LSSU

Horizon, the U.S. Navy "rock" band, will be appearing in Sault Ste. Marie for two concerts on April 19 in Lake Superior State University's Arts Center auditorium.

The band will play for area school children in a sold-out performance at 10 a.m. and for the general public at 7 p.m. Both concerts are free of charge and tickets for the evening concert are now available first-come, first-served at the Norris Center box office.

Led by Musician First Class David Bogart, the six-piece band travels throughout the Midwest. The band's performances appeal to a wide variety of audiences who enjoy classic rock hits, Motown, country, funk, jazz and top-40. The band's showmanship and outstanding musical presentation puts them in great demand for state fairs, concerts and festivals.

The six members of Horizons are part of Navy Band Great Lakes, one of the Navy's 14 official military bands around the world. It was once led by Lt. John Philip Sousa.

Navy Band Great Lakes includes 46 professional Navy musicians making up a 40-piece wind ensemble, an 18-piece jazz ensemble, a 22-member ceremonial unit, a contemporary entertainment ensemble, the Brass Ambassadors and Fair Winds woodwind quintets, a jazz combo and Horizons. The bands perform for hundreds of thousands of people each year in support of community relations and recruiting in an 11-state area stretching from Michigan to North Dakota.

The band's stop in Sault Ste. Marie is part of a three-day, two-city swing through Michigan that will include two performances April 17 at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City and another two performances on April 18 at Traverse City West High School.
