Protect your family from radon

What is radon? It is Mother Earth's only naturally produced radioactive gas and comes from the breakdown of uranium in soil, rock, and water. You cannot see or smell radon, but it can become a health hazard when it accumulates indoors. Radon enters your home through cracks and openings in the foundations floor and walls. If you live in a home with high levels of radon, you therefore inhale it into your lungs. There it releases energy that can damage the DNA in sensitive lung tissue and cause cancer. It is estimated that radon causes over 15,000 lung cancer deaths each year.

During the month of March , radon testing was done for several homes in cooperation with the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan, Inc. and the Bay Mills Housing Authority in the following locations:

Crane Road - Lakeshore Drive - Pine Village - Tower Road - Red Pine Lane - Tamarack Road - Towering Pines - Spectacle - Sawmill Pt. Road - Ironwood Row - Turtle Drive and Wolf Road.

If your home was not tested and you would like to do so, please contact the Bay Mills Housing Authority or myself. If you have any questions, or need more information do not hesitate to contact the ITC at 906-632-6896 extension: 121.

Laaksonen is an environmental technician with the Inter-Tribal Council of Michigan.
