Protecting the windows to your world: your eyes

On April 10, Bausch & Lomb temporarily suspended shipment of contact solution ReNu after helath officials linked it to a fungal eye infection that can cause tempoarary blindness.

The infection is a fungus that is typically found in plant material in tropical areas. It was first discovered in January in an overseas shipment of the product. Without treatment the infection can lead to scarring of the cornea and eventual vision loss. The Centers for Disease Control is currently investigating the case.

In light of the recent increase in eye infections in those who wear contact lenses, contact lens wearers are being reminded to do the following:

- Do not handle your contact lenses with dirty hands. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry them before handling lenses.

- Do not wear lenses overnight unless they are designed to be worn this way. Wear lenses according to directions received from your eye car specialist.

- Never put lenses in your mouth to clean. Clean your lenses with only approved lens cleaner.

- As always, if you experience redness, tearing, eye pain, drainage, and/or sensitivity to light, please see your health care provider.
