SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Bay Mills Community College was awarded with the United Way Corporate Neighbor of the Year Award on Monday, April 24 at the United Way's 20th annual awards luncheon at the Quality Inn in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. More than 260 people from various nonprofit clubs and organizations and business attended as the United Way gave out their awards at the luncheon to kick off National Volunteer Week.
According to Director of the United Way Volunteer Center Kristina Beamish, BMCC, which was chosen as the volunteer of the month back in January after being nominated by TRiO Counselor Nikki Dowd, an advisory committee at the volunteer center looked at all of 2006's monthly spotlight award winners before making their decision on who would receive the award. The committee decided that BMCC, rather than focusing on one particular cause at one particular time, had an all-encompassing service in the community year round.
"When we looked at all the corporate partner winners, it was clear that BMCC had put forth a year long effort," Beamish said. "With all the economic cutbacks, more organizations are relying on volunteer services. BMCC really showed they are committed to helping provide some of these services on a wide range of causes."
BMCC President Mickey Parish, who was on hand to receive the award, said the award is an acknowledgement of all the hard work done by some of the college's new staff members.
"It's very nice to get the award," Parish said. "At the same time, it recognizes the work of some of our newest and youngest staff members and it also brings good recognition to the tribe and to the college."
