LSSU Golf Classic gets a local boost

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - Shane Woolever D.O. of Greater Peninsula Orthopedics will be the title sponsor of the 17th annual Lake State Golf Classic when golfers tee off on June 10 to 12 at the Otsego Club in Gaylord.

The Athletic Development Committee of the Lake Superior State University Foundation, which organizes the tournament, said funds raised from this year's event are earmarked for Laker Club student-athlete financial aid.

"Once again, Dr. Woolever is helping LSSU in a unique way," said Tony Bosbous, ADC chairman. "We appreciate his efforts in raising funds to help LSSU athletes reach their goals in the classroom and on the playing surface."

Coming to Sault Ste. Marie in 2001, Woolever started Greater Peninsula Orthopedics and joined the staff at War Memorial Hospital as an orthopedic surgeon. He was the director of Adult Joint Reconstruction and the chairman of the OR Operations Committee from 2001-03. Woolever specializes in Ilzarov deformity correction, fracture stabilization, joint reconstruction and sports medicine.

Woolever has been very supportive of LSSU, according to Tom Coates, assistant athletic director at LSSU.

"Whether it is providing specialized care for our student-athletes, funding chairs for the basketball and volleyball teams, or supporting the Lake State Classic, Dr. Woolever has been there for us," said Coates. "Also, the Woolevers are Laker Club members at the President's Level."

For sponsorship or registration information on the Lake State Golf Classic, contact Coates in Laker Athletics at 906-635-6670. Find out more about the LSSU Foundation and the Classic at lssu.edu/foundation.

The LSSU Foundation's Athletic Development Committee includes Bosbous, Kevin Cooper and Rob Mackie, from Sault Ste. Marie, and Jim Kjolhede from Coppell, Texas, Gary McClellan, Frankenmuth, and Anthony Palumbo, Traverse City.
