Ojibwe Charter School officially in Northern Lights League

On Thursday, March 16, at the Northern Lights League Athletic Director Meeting, the Northern Lights League Athletic Directors unanimously voted for the Ojibwe Charter School to officially become part of the Northern Lights League for middle school and high school sports. In 2004, the school was admitted into the league on conditional membership pending a two-year probation period. To become an official member of the league the school had to prove it was financially capable of completing all scheduled games and providing an adequate hosting site for home games. It is a great honor for our school to be a part of the Northern Lights League Association. This will provide our student athletes the opportunity to compete for league standings, league awards, and also allow them the opportunity to compete in the district tournament.

We would like to thank all who were involved in this process. Thank you to Terry Carrick for initiating and following through with this vision. Thank you to the school board for supporting this idea. Thanks to our student athletes, parents, coaches, and athletic committee for their time and efforts. And a special thank you to parents and coaches that drove our athletes the many miles on game day; Twyla Ball, Millie Carrick, Cindy Teeple, Laurie Teeple, Theresa Tadgerson, Shelly Deuman, Suzanne Mills, Arlen Kuzmik, and John Paul Lufkins. Also thank you to the Recreation Department for the use of the gym and the Bay Mills Resort and Casino for their generous donations throughout the year. It is truly through the efforts and support of this community that we were accepted into the Northern Lights League.

Sincerely,
Sandy Sawyer

Local residents saved from dangerous situation

Two Sault Ste. Marie citizens and business owners, Darryl and Donna Dalimonte along with Bay Mills Police Sergeant Phillip Donnay, Officer Paul Baragwanath and Sergeant Dean Parish all had a part in the rescue of my children, young niece and brother when the boat they were in ran out of gas and was blown offshore from Back Bay in Bay Mills. Thank you Darryl and Donna for taking time to assist in their rescue and using your own personal boat to find them. Thank you Sergeant Donnay, Officer Baragwanath and Sergeant Parish for your help and support in bringing them back to shore safely. I'm also very thankful that my brother and son both had their cell phones and were able to call for help. None of the boaters were dressed to be out on the water at night and owe their safe return to the combined efforts of many wonderful hands.

Thank you,
Brenda Austin
