History Department identifies photosThe Bay Mills History Department has learned that the woman featured in a previous article weaving a black ash basket was Catherine "Cassie" Joseph. She was born on September 10, 1870 and is the daughter of Edward "Nawtawmawbe" Joseph and Sophia "Waybegewaunaquay" Ojibway of Shawan's Band of Sugar Island. The photo was taken on Sugar Island around 1900.

At right, is Mrs. Joseph (mother of Catherine) holding grandson Elmer Sprinket.

Edward and Sophia had 7 children: Archange "Netamop: married Joseph Gurnoe; Rosalie - Married Mose Oller; Catherine "Cassie" married Edward Boulley (Boullia, Bully, Boulla); Lizzie - married Fred Cameron; Zoa - married George Boucher; Peter; Sarah - married Fred Sprinket (Sprinkette, Sprinkle). Catherine and Edward had niine children; Mary - married Ed Pine; Stephen; Vina; Alex; Norman - married Louisa Williams; Stella - married a Harper; Louisa - married John Smith; Abraham - married Jenny Williams; Marcel (Mike?). Edward Boulleys' father was Abraham Boullia (born 1833) and his mother was Maria Negawaynawsenoquay (born 1835) also known as Marie Muckwaboam. Marie Muckwaboam was a sister to Jane Muckwaboam (Mrs. Simon Teeple).

The photo below is of Edward and Catherine Boulley's farm on Sugar Island.
