TROUT LAKE, Mich - Brian Streichert's 7th and 8th Grade Culture class at the Ojibwe Charter School, along with Wanda Perron as their guide, explored a quarry near Trout Lake on Wednesday, May 10. The light drizzle did not stop this group of eager students from reaching the apex, but it did take teamwork.
The experience was used as a history lesson and a gathering mission at the same time. They mined for flint in order to make arrowheads in an upcoming lesson. The students also found leeks, spring beauty, sage and mushrooms with the guided instruction of Perron.
While climbing the side of the cliff's face, 8th grade student Rebekah Austin stumbled upon two eagle eggs resting in a nest, awaiting their mother's return. She informed the others, but of course, the nest was not disrupted.
That was really cool," she said. "I can't believe I found it!"
The students also rode to Mission Hill and the Spectacle Lake overlook. They walked through the cemetery, paying respects to loved ones. The students made mention of coming back and cleaning up the area and plans are being made to do so.
Cole Tadgerson, reflecting on the experience said, "I'm really glad I went; it was fun. Let's go again once I have my cast off!"
The list of students involved, starting with 8th grade: Michael Teeple, Brandon Croad, George Kelly, Rebekah Austin, Brighton LeBlanc and Jade LeBlanc. 7th grade: Kelsey Ball, Tony Bjork, Allan Elliott, Alisa LeBlanc, Nick McCall, Daraka McLeod, Kayt St. Peter and Cole Tadgerson. Wanda Perron, Jenny Jacobson, Audrey Breakie, Twyla Ball and Brian Streichert each reached the top as well.
