Blessing of the Bikes moves back to DeTour
People of the Bay Mills and Brimley area:
On June 10, 2006 the Eastern Upper Peninsula Blessing of the Bikes will be returning to its roots. We are moving back to DeTour Village. Thirteen years ago I founded the EUP Blessing of the Bikes in an effort to help disadvantaged veterans and the homeless. The many people we have helped over the years speak volumes to the kindness of the American biker. Many lessons have been learned along the way. One such lesson is profits and charity cannot walk on the same side of the street. Therefore, I must take my charity fundraiser and go back to where we will be able to do the things we started out to do. I would like to say thank you to the Bay Mills Resort & Casino for being our host for the past couple of years. I would also like to wish them the best on their new Thunder fest endeavor.
Sincerely,
L. Terrence "Godfather" Nelson

Family give thanks for support
The family of Lisa (Hugo) McClearen would like to express their sincere gratitude for all the loving support that was received by family, friends, and the community during our unexpected loss. Our daughter, sister, mother and grandmother is very dear to us, and it is wonderful to see how many lives she has touched. Regarded for her innocent, hard-working nature and respect for others , she loved with truth of heart in her roots and loved nature. We can only begin to tell you how truly thankful we are.
Chi Miigwetch.

Employees recognized for their hard work
Kudos to the Bay Mills Fitness Center employees for all their hard work and encouragement during the 2006 Fitness Challenge. Twenty-two individuals from this area finished the challenge and walked a total of 13,0007,645 steps. What a great "step" toward improving the overall health and well being of our community.
Thank you Joan Jerman, Jeanne Bedell and Jennifer Bell!

Community should be proud of P.R.I.D.E. group
To the editors:
In light of all the recent negative publicity surrounding our youth in this community, we wanted to take this opportunity to praise the children involved in the P.R.I.D.E. group for their outstanding behavior this past weekend.
We started out performing at the Brimley Schools Pow Wow on Friday, May 12. This was a very important event, especially since there were several members of the Brimley School community that did not want this pow wow at all. Our kids were excellent. They behaved very well and were awesome singing and dancing.
After the pow wow, we started on a trip to Baraga, where our drum group was performing for the Keeweenaw Bay Head Start Pow Wow. The trip is about 5 1/2 hours with breaks.
We took the kids out to eat and they were polite and well mannered. Our children stayed in hotels without incident. They sang for the Head Start graduation ceremony and danced all day at the pow wow.
The pow wow committee was so impressed with our kids that they invited them to stay for the drum social and offered to put us up for the night. The parents of our members know that we have never extended a trip before, so this was quite a compliment.
The trip was exhausting, but the children treated each other as brothers and sisters, with the older ones watching and helping out the younger children, especially Chelsea Cameron, Daraka McLeod, Alonzo Napalee and Mike Teeple, who really stepped up and helped with the younger kids. Before we left, an elder from one of the drums told us she had been in the restaurant that morning and could not believe how well-behaved our children were, especially with only a few adults to watch them. She said she has been doing pow wows all her life and watching our boys and girls singing and our lovely girls dancing made this pow wow the best she had ever experienced.
We wanted to give our heartfelt thanks for all the chaperones who helped us with this trip: Sandy Walden, Stacey Walden, Stephanie Walden, Deb Walden, Cindy Teeple, George Belleau, Jamie Brotherton and Lorie Teeple for driving our bus; Andrea Shaw for loaning her bus to us; Ann Belleau and Terri Denome from InterTribal Council for inviting us to the pow wow.
All of the participants were at their utmost respectable selves and we give them credit for how they react with each other, like an extended family. These kids deserve the best and hopefully they can find themselves belonging to their own culture and traditions until they are old and gray and passing it on to their grandchildren in the end, which is our intent and how it was taught to us.
To the parents of our P.R.I.D.E. members, you all have wonderful, talented children and we appreciate the opportunity of working with them.
