Thanks for successful women's event

LettersOn Tuesday, June 20, 43 women attended dinner and a movie that was conducted by a grant received for $5,000 to get women out into a healthy safe environment. During this event we had a dinner buffet at Sacy's Restaurant where we were treated like queens. Gifts were also given out during this event.

Each woman received a gift. Billi Jo Sage gave a presentation on how to protect yourself from exposure to the sun.

Two baskets of beach gear were given out. The two winners were Amelia LeBlanc and Eileen Daigle.

I would like to thank all of you who attended and a special thank you to all of those that helped me with this event: Nicole Lothrop, Dawn LeBlanc and Donelda Schofield.

Also a very big thank you to Billi Jo Sage for doing a wonderful presentation!

Sincerely,
Joann LeBlanc,
Healthy Start Nurse

Community member thanks American Legion

Thank you, American Legion members of Hulbert, Mich., and VFW members of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. for the everlasting peaceful memory of the honor you gave to my husband, Randy Brown, at his burial May 27, 2006 on Mission Hill. Thank you also to Shannon Hascall for doing "Taps."

With respect for all of you,
Mary Brown and family.

Thank you for the celebration

Dear people of the Holy Trinity St. Francis and Blessed Kateri parishes:

The celebration of my 40th anniversary of ordination was a most memorable and wonderful experience. Your love and generosity is greatly appreciated. I thank Fr. Al and the committee who helped him put the celebration together. It took a lot of careful planning and many people enjoyed the effort. My family and friends were deeply moved by the beautiful Liturgy, reception and banquet that you gave me. What a gift you are to me. I thank God for all of you, and for the countless anniversary cards, notes, warm wishes, presents, and most of all -prayers on my behalf.

Let me offer a special thanks to our Native American community, who enhanced the celebration with beautiful music and songs in the Ojibwe language. They also honored me in a "naming ceremony" conducted by Brother John Hascall and Irma Parrish.

Just before the Mass, John Ignatowski and the choir presented me with a magnificent beautiful red (for Pentecost) chasuble Mass vestment, which I wore the first time at my anniversary Mass. I thank them with all my heart, as I thank you all, for this wonderful expression of your love and support of me and the Holy Priesthood of Christ!

Thanks to Mike and Michelle Willis and the Cedar Spirit Singers: Kat Memegos, Dr. Vivica Sherman, Chelsey Cameron, and Daraka McLeod, Raelynn Hunter, Debbie Teeple, Miigizheekewe Memegos for singing and drumming. Father Ted was very touched by the part you played on the celebration of his 40 years in the priesthood.

Thanks also to Yvonne Ogston who sponsored him during the naming ceremony and Kurt Perron who presented Father Ted with Native American-made gifts from the Cultural Council and on behalf of the Bay Mills Indian Community.

You all contributed to making this a memorable occasion for Father.

Pollution a problem locally

To the editors:
Regarding the Whitefish Bay Scenic Byway project I was one of the public respondents whose comments may have helped the opposition to such development. This area should remain as undeveloped and unspoiled as possible.

Along these ideas, there was a waste dumping situation I found that many of you should be aware of. Ankadash Creek is one of several small streams that drain into Lake Superior along Whitefish Bay. It is a popular spot during the spring smelt run, where the parking lot allows a number of campers to stay near the mouth of the stream. The forest stand is a mix of hemlock, cedar, spruce, and fir, with a fairly open understory.

I took a walk through the woods along the stream after the crows cleared, for it is a place of great beauty that I visit on occasion. A stone's throw from the parking area were dozens of piles of human waste, apparently from campers dumping their portable toilets. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen in the woods.

There is no excuse for this. How can so-called outdoorsmen do this? They could have at least buried their waste. The area may have been a contaminated site, including the stream.

Yes, it has been reported to the Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Forest Service. They plan to show at these parking areas where smelt crowds camp next spring. In case they forget, I plan to remind them.

Perhaps some tribal members with cameras and cell phones could help prevent this from reoccurring. There are a number of camping spots used by smelters where this may be an issue.

Such utter disregard for such a unique area, and other users, should not be tolerated. The people who do this should be disgraced. We can all make a difference by preserving our natural resources.

Respectfully,
Karl Shaffer

Thank you community

Dear community members,
We would like to express our sincere appreciation to Bay Mills Resort and Casino, King's Club Casino, Bucko Teeple, Keith Cameron, the pall bearers, the drummers, and all other community memners that took the time and effort to donate food, money and hard work at the time of Joyce Siegal's passing.

She will be sadly missed by many, especially her family, and it seems like words cannot express the full appreciation felt by her family. We believe that Joyce would have been grateful and felt honored by everyone's kindness and thougtfulness.

On her behalf, we would like to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts.

Sincerely,
The family of Joyce Siegal

Thanks for all the support

I would like to take this time to thank Wanda and Cheryl for helping me through my illness and broken rib. They spent nights with me at the hospital and through my rough time.

I also want to give a big thanks to all of my children for the devotion and hours spent with their ailing brother. Also, the hours that Dale and Wayne devoted to their father to help make his last days more bearable.

I want to thank everyone who came to visit me and everyone who sent the many cards and flower arrangements that I received for my home and for the funeral.

I am still in awe over the amount of people at the church and cemetery. It was heart warming to know that he was so well thought of.

A big heartfelt thanks to the Bay Mills Indian Community also.

A special thank you goes out to my granddaughter Tracy for all the goodies she baked for her uncle.

Also, to Irma and Corrine for the many dishes of food they brought to us and to the many others that sent food to my home, to the church and the Senior Center.

To those who attended the fire and to the Drummers, thank you very much.

Thanks to all.

From his Mom, Aggie Carrick
