Flushing medication down the drain contaminates water that is later ingested by fish, wildlife, and humans. The MedSafe program collects old pharmaceuticals and safely disposes of them so these compounds don’t contaminate drinking water or enter the food chain. To dispose of old medication contact the Bay Mills Health Center Pharmacy. View other locations in the Eastern Upper Peninsula here.

Automobile tires contain benzene, toluene, arsenic, acetone, nickel, copper, and cadmium—chemicals that can leach into the environment when abandoned in woods and waters. Burning tires release toxic smoke containing sulfuric acid and nitric acid that can have serious impacts on human health. Bay Mills Biological Services seeks to reduce this hazard by collecting old tires for tribal members May – Oct 15 annually. Drop off your old tires at  Bay Mills Maintenance Department during regular business hours.

Some light bulbs contain small amounts of mercury gas (which in high doses is hazardous to human health); when dead bulbs are thrown out with regular garbage, they can pose a risk to trash collectors and the environment. The Bulb Crusher program safely traps dangerous gas and crushes old light bulbs for safe disposal. To dispose of old light bulbs contact the Bay Mills Maintenance Department.

Cardboard that could be recycled is often sent to landfill. Drop of your cardboard at Bay Mills Maintenance Department and support other recycling initiatives. Stop in during regular business hours or contact Bay Mills Maintenance Department.

Household hazardous waste (HHW) are used materials can be harmful and should never go into regular trash. If placed down a sink or storm drain, HHW could contaminate groundwater or even Lake Superior. Biological Services strives to host HHW collection events in the spring and fall to gather empty aerosol can, batteries, stains, cleaners, and more. HHW items were sorted and transported to a facility that can dispose of those items safely. For information on HHW collection events contact Bay Mills Biological Services.

These collections are made possible by the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. If you are aware of or suspect locations in the area with hazardous chemical contamination, please report them to Biological Services.
